Meeting Notes: May 2018

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for stopping by the Digital Media CoP meeting today! We had a full house and had very interesting discussions and presentations take place.

UBC Media Server Updates:

First, we had an update on the Media Storage solutions offered on campus by Kirk, Andrew and insights shared by Gideon from UBC Studios Okanagan.

Findings:

  • For on-campus solutions offered by UBCIT (eg. teamshare) the best option would be to open a new server under the different units from CoP to see if we are able to lower the cost per GB down.
  • Talks will be going forward, and a new working group will be created. We will be calling out for individuals to join this working group and hold regular update meetings outside of CoP.
  • IT does not currently have the sufficient infrastructure to support large 4k video editing on its servers given limitations in networking and data transfer speeds.

Summer Projects & DMCoP in the Summer Months

We then had a round table discussion on projects that will be going on in the summer from each unit. From different promotional and educational videos and updates to the new space and initiatives at UBCO,  it was very exciting to hear what teams were working on. We wish everyone the best of luck on their respective projects!

It was also decided that Digital Media CoP meetings will be continuing during the summer, and only cancelled if RSVP’s drop below a certain threshold. The Media Storage Working Group will be continuing on to figure out a solution for the group as soon as possible.

Next CoP meeting is scheduled for June 14th, hope to see you then!
