Meeting Notes: September 2018

Hi everyone,

Thanks again to everyone who managed to make it to the September CoP meeting!

It was great to hear about all of the interesting things you worked on over the summer as well as some new projects coming down the pipeline:

  • Justin visited several students studying at various pharmacies and created a video series that showcases their experiences.
  • Saeed mentioned how Michael has been working on using 360 videos to help medical students adjust to hospital environments. The project is currently in testing with focus groups.
  • Duncan created lots of B roll footage for marketing and communications, which is currently being used for recruitment purposes for the university.
  • Andrew has started operating another semester of Professor Mark Mac Lean’s MATH253 livestream course through Lightboard. The student feedback was overwhelmingly positive from last year and the class recordings have high viewing/rewatching rates (especially around exam season!) The stream quality has also been upgraded from 540p to 1080p this year.
  • Farhan, UBC Studios’ new media specialist, has been working in conjunction with the Emerging Media Lab on “Journey With Me,” which is an interactive, audio-visual, AR, location-based, storytelling mobile app which explores the experiences of Syrian refugees.
  • Kirk took us on a virtual 360 tour of UBC Studios that was created with Matterport and uploaded to Google Street View! It’s also available to see on UBC Studios’ website here.

We also had a special guest, Jürg Fraefel, who plans on sharing the current projects in development at the Zurich University of Teacher Education at our next CoP meeting.

The DMCoP meetings will be held on the 2nd Thursday of each month, so our next one is scheduled for October 11th. Hope to see you all there!
